Current Research Project
Carnivores of the North Luangwa Valley, Zambia: documenting species diversity and distribution, and estimating population size of carnivores in dense bush and forest habitats. The primary goals of this study are:
- To document carnivore biodiversity in northeastern Zambia
- To assess distribution and population viability of four target species of large carnivores (African lion, Panthera leo, leopard, Panthera pardus, African hunting dog, Lycaon pictus, spotted hyena, Crocuta crocuta)
- To develop accurate, non-invasive census methods for carnivores in densely vegetated habitats such as those which occur throughout much of sub-Saharan Africa
- To train local biologists in carnivore census techniques that can be used to produce comparable data on carnivores in other parts of Zambia, and ultimately, throughout the southern Africa region
