Environmental Science Majors receive research grant
The Santa Monica Bay Audubon Society will support student work on coastal sage scrub and grassland dynamics in the Santa Monica Mountains.
Led by Institute teaching associate Travis Brooks, a six-student Environmental Science practicum group received a grant from the Santa Monica Bay Audubon Society. Each student was awarded $125 for expenses related to the study.
Students Ross Bernet, Morgan Fahlman, Kevin Kawakami, Charles Le, Jessica Savio and Karly Wagner applied for the support for their practicum project, "Mapping Vegetation Boundaries in the Santa Monica Mountains," which will inform management by the National Park Service. The practicum, which runs the entire academic year and is coordinated by Institute Professor Travis Longcore, requires students to team up on an environmental case study representing a real-life multi-disciplinary forward looking issue, collect original data and generate an analysis.
The Santa Monica Bay Audubon Society is chapter of the National Audubon Society. The environmental non-profit’s mission is to conserve and restore natural ecosystems, focusing on birds, other wildlife and their habitats for the benefit of humanity and the earth's biological diversity.
