2014 Commencement Keynote Speaker: Zev Yaroslavsky, Los Angeles County Supervisor, 3rd District

During a career in public life spanning nearly four decades, Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky has been at the forefront of Los Angeles County’s biggest issues, from transportation to the environment to health care to the arts. He has been a pioneering advocate for the region’s homeless population and has played a key role in efforts to reform the county’s law enforcement agencies.

Zev Yaroslavsky has a long history of tackling important environmental issues over his career. While on the LA City Council, he co-authored Proposition O, which banned oil drilling along the city’s shoreline. As a member of the Board of Supervisors, he authored the 1996 Proposition ‘A’ park bond, which resulted in the preservation of a broad swath of rural open space and the development of urban parks throughout the county. Yaroslavsky was the driving force behind the hugely successful Orange Line busway across the San Fernando Valley,, and he pushed hard for creation of the new light rail Expo Line, which, when completed by 2015, will travel to Santa Monica from Downtown Los Angeles. He has been a tireless champion for preserving the Santa Monica Mountains and cleaning up Santa Monica Bay. Places like Ahmanson Ranch, lower Topanga Canyon and King Gillette Ranch would not be in public hands without his leadership.

Like so many great leaders, Yaroslavsky is also a Bruin: He earned an M.A. in British Imperial History and a B.A. in Economics and History, both from UCLA.
