Abstract

The major health threats challenging human populations--cancer, heart disease, infection and others--are neither unique to our species nor to our modern times. Study of the etiology and natural history of spontaneously-occurring diseases of non-human species can lead to novel hypotheses and insights which can be brought to the human hospital bedside.  Indeed, comparative and evolutionary biology offer a new frontier for translational medicine.
