“Pathogen Evolution in a Vaccinated World” by Andrew Read, Director, Center for Infectious Disease Dynamics, Alumni Professor, Department of Biological Sciences and Professor of Entomology, Pennsylvania State University

Drug resistant pathogens are common, but vaccine resistant pathogens are not. I will nonetheless argue that not all vaccines will be evolution-proof. In theory and in practice, immunization can drive the evolution of a variety of pathogen phenotypes, many of which can erode vaccine efficacy. I will discuss our experimental work which shows that some vaccines can cause the evolution of pathogens which induce more severe disease in the unvaccinated.
