Keeping Earth in business
1% for the Planet exists to build and support an alliance of businesses financially committed to creating a healthy planet.
Created in 2002 by Patagonia founder Yvon Choinard, 1% for the Planet is dedicated to the pursuit of sustainability and to preserving and restoring our natural resources. 1% for the Planet is a non-profit organization that operates by building a network of businesses that pledge to give one percent of their annuals sales to select environmental non-profit groups across the globe.
Member businesses come from all variety of industry—there are currently over 1,300 companies signed up. This commitment is a powerful way for businesses to help drive positive environmental change, gain recognition for their responsibility, and promote further action on the part of consumers and other companies. Companies officially join 1% for the Planet and then donate directly to the desired non-profit. 1% for the Planet verifies the funding is processed.
There are thousands of environmental non-profits that member businesses can support. Non-profits on the list are thoroughly researched and approved. To qualify an organization must spend 50% or more of its time working on sustainability issues, or have a dedicated program focused on the environment. Rebecca Callahan Klein, Vice President for Organizational Development at 1% for the Planet, commented on these diverse non-profits groups. “More than 2,300 non-governmental organizations are qualified to receive funds from 1% member companies. There are large global organizations such as Conservation Alliance, The Nature Conservancy, Sierra Club and Surfrider Foundation, as well as local organizations such as Heal the Bay and Friends of the LA River.”
The UCLA Institute of the Environment and Sustainability is one of the groups member companies can contribute to. “We are pleased to have the UCLA Institute for the Environment and Sustainability as a 1% for the Planet non-profit partner. The Institute is doing critical work educating current and future leaders about environmental challenges and finding real world solutions to these issues. Several 1% member companies give to the Institute,” said Klein.
According to Giving USA Foundation statistics from 2008, less than 2% of charitable giving is directed to the environment. Klein and 1% for the Planet believe that protecting and restoring the environment is critical to our shared future.
