For more than a decade, the UCLA Institute of the Environment and Sustainability (IoES) has published a report card focused on key indicators of the status of the environment and long-term sustainability of the Southern California region. Typically, four indicators a year have been critically evaluated by appropriate UCLA faculty experts, and grades assigned to regional stakeholders relevant for that indicator, including decision-makers, agencies, industry, NGOs and the public. Selected examples of regional indicators treated to date include air pollution, water quality, wild-land fire, wetlands, wastewater treatment, greenhouse gas emissions, hazardous waste, storm-water regulation, urban parks, marine conservation, sustainable building, traffic and congestion, solid waste, water conservation, invasive species, air toxics, drinking water quality, and preserving biodiversity.
