The WRAP was established in 1993 by the California Integrated Waste Management Board to recognize California businesses for exemplary efforts to reduce waste such as paper, cardboard and other recyclable products, which might otherwise go to landfills.

Northrop Grumman's Aerospace Systems sites in El Segundo, Palmdale, and Redondo Beach, Calif., were recognized by the WRAP for accomplishments such as the following:
• Collectively the three sites recycle approximately one million pounds of material annually, especially white paper and metal.
• The El Segundo facility, an award winner for the 14th consecutive year, has donated significant amounts of surplus office supplies to 10 local schools during the past three years. The equivalent donation of new equipment would total approximately $4,000 per school.
• The Palmdale location initiated a new commingled-recycling program to increase the amount of materials it resells, reuses and recycles, thus diverting more waste from landfills.
• The Redondo Beach site partners with Los Angeles County to host an annual "household hazardous waste roundup" for employees and the community.
