Environmental Science Awards

Each year the Institute of the Environment acknowledges two Environmental Science students for their achievements.

• The Environmental Science Academic Achievement Award recognizes the student with the highest level of academic achievement in his or her cohort.

The recipient of the 2009 Academic Achievement Award is Bryan Moy.

Bryan graduated with a concentration in Environmental Health, and has obtained excellent results in a challenging curriculum at UCLA. He is continuing his studies at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health this fall, where he will study environmental epidemiology. Bryan was also chosen as this year's student speaker for the Environmental Science Commencement Ceremony.

• The Environmental Science Outstanding Service Award recognizes one student who has shown exceptional engagement in environmental issues outside the classroom in the course of his or her college career.

The recipient of the 2009 Outstanding Service Award is Shahir Masri.

Shahir graduated with a concentration in Environmental Health, and is continuing his education with a graduate program in Environmental Health at Harvard University this fall. Shahir has volunteered at the Environmental Charter High School, Santiago High School, and Algalita Marine Research Foundation. His volunteer and fundraising efforts for local environmental organizations and UCLA student groups are exemplary.
