Do it in the Dark - "Save Energy" Competition Results!
From February 1st to March 1st 2010, students pledged to reduce their energy consumption during UCLA's 2nd annual Residence Hall energy competition, resulting in significant energy savings.
Over 1,500 students pledged and together an estimated 52,980 KWH of electricity were saved
The all-hill energy competition "Do It in the Dark" energy competition was a great success. Over 1,500 students pledged to help reduce their residential hall's energy consumption by 10% and together an estimated 52,980 KWH of electricity were saved for the month of February. This is nearly double the 27,580 KWH of electricity savings from the 1st Energy Competition in 2009. Additionally, over twice as many students pledged than last year.
The energy saved this year is equivalent to the energy needed to run 1315 60-watt light bulbs continuously for an entire month (65,580 lbs of carbon emissions).
Dykstra Hall, Hitch Suites, and Rieber Terrace had the highest number of pledges per residents in their buildings. About 35% of the students living in each of the halls pledged.
The building with the greatest energy reduction was Hedrick Hall, with an outstanding 24% reduction based on the January baseline. Hedrick Summit had the next greatest energy reduction with 9%.
With a great showing in both percent building pledges and percent energy reduction, Hitch Suites emerged as the Grand Prize winner. An ice cream social for Hitch will be scheduled for early spring quarter.
In addition to the ice cream social grand prize, 5 sustainability themed “treasure boxes” will be given to the floors with the highest pledges and 10 students will be randomly selected from those who pledged for a $25 gift certificate to the ASUCLA store.
Thanks to all who participated. Keep conserving!
