Institute of the Environment students win top award at UCLA Science Poster Day
IoE's Sarah Diringer and Danielle Perrot earn the Dean's Prize Honoring Outstanding Undergraduate Researchers at UCLA Science Poster Day.
Sarah Diringer, Environmental Science Major
"Carbon export from the coastal algal blooms."
I have been working in Dr. Rebecca Shipe's lab since January 2007 doing both lab work and field water collection in Santa Monica Bay. Working with Dr. Shipe over the past 3 years has been a wonderful experience. I've learned so much about not only diatoms and oceanography, but being a researcher and potentially a career scientist! Winning the Dean's Prize was a great honor and surprise! Science Poster Day was a wonderful experience, and a great way to show faculty and friends what we have all been working so hard on.
Danielle Perrot, Environmental Science Major
"Quantifying the Effects of the Mountain Pine Beetle on Melt Morphology and Timing in the Colorado River Basin, USA"
In terms of the design of the poster I wanted something that would flow logically, from left to right, top to bottom. I also wanted a poster with lots of color, graphs and photos.
The Institute of the Environment's support of student research is outstanding. I think that Sarah and I winning the Dean's Prize reflects the excellent guidance we've received from our mentors and from this department. The IoE has made me (as a scientist) think about the social implications of my work. I think it makes those interested in public policy, community organizing and economics consider the science behind their work. UCLA is a research institution and I think it is so important and valuable that the IoE is following in this tradition by incorporating research into the major's curriculum.
Undergraduate students in the College who complete one or more quarters of research on a life, biomedical, engineering, mathematics or physical science project, or who volunteer in a research lab, are eligible to participate in this science design competition.
