Summer HVAC Reduction program 2009
As summer approaches, we are once again initiating the Summer HVAC reduction program to save energy and reduce campus greenhouse gas emissions.
2009 Summer HVAC Reduction Program
To save energy and reduce campus operating expenses when campus occupancy is low, a summer HVAC Reduction program will be implemented in buildings during 14 Summer Sundays plus the 4th of July and Labor Day three-day weekends. Approximately 20 non-laboratory buildings are involved. The bullets below will lead you to information regarding the 2009 Summer HVAC Reduction Program.

Building services and operating conditions, with the exception of heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) will not be affected by the program. Access to buildings will be in the normal condition for Sundays and weekends (building that are normally open will be open, trash pickup and bathroom restocking will not be affected, etc.). HVAC will be reduced or eliminated in 20 non-laboratory campus buildings except for areas requiring conditioned air to protect artifacts, musical instruments, temperature-sensitive books and research materials. Cooling will be provided to protect electronic equipment in server rooms, critical data and voice rooms and hub rooms. Laboratories, vivaria, patient areas and campus housing will not be affected by this summer initiative.
The following conditions will apply in program buildings.
-
Building ventilation will be turned off where heating and cooling is not required and will be reduced where occupancy is low.
-
Building heating will be turned off (unless there is a need to maintain minimum temperatures).
-
Building cooling will be turned off (unless there is a need to limit maximum temperatures).
-
No electricity will be turned off.
-
All lighting will remain functional although lighting in unoccupied areas will be turned off at wall switches.
-
All lighting will remain functional although lighting in unoccupied areas will be turned off at wall switches.
Individuals occupying buildings with reduced services should dress for eth appropriate climate conditions.
In all buildings, regardless of shutdown status, conditioned air will be provided where needed to protect artifacts, instruments, vivaria and research materials.
In all buildings, regardless of shutdown status, cooling will be provided to server and electronic equipment rooms that have been identified as needing forced cooling.
Buildings designated as Off will, consistent with the above, have no ventilation air, building heat or building cooling.
Buildings designated as Reduced will, consistent with the above, have no building heat. Ventilation and cooling will be provided either in reduced amounts or to selected areas.
Buildings designated as Normal will have the normal supply of heating, cooling and ventilation sufficient for the building occupancy.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Are you turning off lights?
Lights will be turned off in unoccupied areas but can be turned on again at the local main switches. If you should choose to work during these scheduled times, please do remember to turn off the lights behind you upon leaving the area.
Do I need a key to get in?
Building hours when buildings will be locked or unlocked will NOT be altered due to this HVAC reduction program.
What time will the building air be turned off or curtailed?
For summer Sundays, most buildings will be affected by 4 p.m. Saturday. The remaining buildings as late as midnight Sunday. For the Labor Day weekend the building air will be affected by 8 p.m. to 10 p.m., Friday evening. For the Fourth of July weekend the building air will be affected by 8 p.m. to 10 p.m., Thursday evening.
Buildings will be either setback or turned off, as indicated on the Building Status List. Some areas of the building may still be maintained to protect computers, temperature-sensitive materials, etc.
What time will the building air be back in service to ensure appropriate comfort?
For summer Sundays, building air will resume normal mode between midnight and 4 a.m. Monday morning. For the Fourth of July 3-day weekend, building air will resume normal mode by as early as midnight to 4 a.m. Monday morning. For the Labor Day 3-day weekend, building air will resume normal mode by as early as 9 p.m. Monday evening to midnight Tuesday morning.
Will our hot water heater be out of service too?
Although hot water heating was not available during the longer winter break interim, the hot water will NOT be affected during this Summer's energy conservation initiative.
What number should I call if utility problems in the buildings should arise?
Please call the Facilities Management Trouble Call Center at (310) 825-9236.
What about those buildings not mentioned in the Building Status List? Will they be supported with HVAC?
Buildings NOT listed on the Building Status list will be left on normal mode and will not be affected by this summer's HVAC Reduction Program.
Your help is needed! All departments, building coordinators and employees are requested to please support reducing energy costs by implementing the following power conservation measures whenever possible:
Computers
-
Turn off all personal appliances including fans, radios and desk lamps
-
Turn off all office equipment including computers, monitors, printers, plotters, facsimile machines, shredders, typewriters and overhead task lights every night and every weekend.
-
Turn off all equipment in computer labs. If you can't turn off the whole computer, turn off the monitor and the printer.
-
Enable power management features on laser printers and/or turn off laser printers when not actively printing.
-
Screen savers do not save energy, but giving your computer a nap does. Enable power management features so your computer monitor and hard drive will go into a low power (blank screen) "sleep mode" when not actively in use.
-
When purchasing any office equipment, be sure to consider Energy Star models that "power down" after a specified period of inactivity.
Heating and Cooling
-
Set local thermostats to low or off. If you have a programmable thermostat, please use it to its best advantage by setting an energy conservation mode at optimum times.
-
Where you have control of your thermostat, set the heating point to no greater than 68 degrees and cooling to no less the 74 degrees Fahrenheit.
-
During the summer season, close blinds, drapes and curtains to reduce heat gain from windows that receive direct sunlight.
-
During the winter season, open blinds, drapes and to let the sun in. If there is no sunlight, close them in order to keep the heat in especially at night.
-
Keep windows and exterior doors closed in heated or air conditioned areas.
Lighting
-
Use day lighting from windows or skylights, instead of electrical lighting whenever possible.
-
Replace incandescent lamps with the lower wattage compact fluorescent lamps whenever possible. Compact fluorescents (CF's) also help to reduce unwanted heat gain during hot summer months yet still provide equivalent lighting.
-
Try task lighting to reduce overhead lighting.
-
Turn off all unnecessary lights, including: overhead lighting, lighting in unoccupied rooms, equipment and storage areas. Reduce overhead lighting, decorative lighting, signage and other lighting inside and out not necessary for security and safety. Maintain security and safety lighting at the lowest acceptable levels.
Miscellaneous
-
Turn off all office and kitchen/lunch room appliances including copiers, printers, microwaves, toaster ovens and coffee pots every night and weekend.
-
Turn off all specialty equipment that will not be used over the weekend and holidays.
-
Set fume hoods to minimum open when not in use.
-
Use hot water sparingly. Conserve water. Turn off water taps when not in use.
-
Recycle. Please dispose of recyclable materials to the appropriate recycling receptacles provided throughout the campus and building locations. For information regarding our Recycling Program, please click on the link in Related Information, or call our Recycling Hotline at (310) 825-3971.
-
Recycle Your Ink Jet/Laser Jet Cartridges. You can obtain a list of cartridges eligible for recycling by calling the Facilities Management Recycling Hot Line at (310) 825-3971.
-
Please report bad thermostats and any air or faucet leaks to Facilities Management Trouble Call Center (see link).
