Bringing the GreenBack

Central Americans working abroad and sending money home are not only fueling their native economies—they’re also helping to bring the trees back. Teaming up, IoES’s Hecht and Saatchi discovered a link between globalization and forest resurgence in El Salvador. Studying the flow of money from immigrants in the United States back to their home country, Hecht concluded that these “remittances“ allow rural families to decrease farming, which has led to forests flourishing.
