The Atlantic Ocean circulation, in particular its Meridional Overturning Circulation (MOC), is sensitive to the surface freshwater flux. In this presentation we show and interpret results on the differences between the (decadal time scale) response of a coarse-resolution (non-eddying) global ocean model and a fine-resolution (strongly eddying) version of the same model to a (relatively large) freshwater perturbation due to melting of the Greenland Ice Sheet. We focus on the effect of the freshwater anomaly on convection, watermass transformations and the basin wide circulation.
